VALERIE’S REVIEW: We Glow @ Ottawa Fringe 2013

We Glow is the charming story of two people obsessed with efficiency who are forced off their life script and into a panic. Written by Brad Long and Emily Pearlman, it’s an off-kilter romantic comedy by way of corporate ladder-climbing satire.
Should you see it?

FourAfter some forced time off, two ambitious corporate climbers find themselves trying to convince their co-workers to let them come back. We Glow is staged in the University of Ottawa’s senate chambers, a room typically not associated with theatre. It works perfectly for this performance, though, as Brad Long and Emily Pearlman plead for their jobs back at a board meeting. The audience is the board; several are even invited to don fancy business jackets and sit at the long table where the meeting is actually happening.

Emily Pearlman and Brad Long are insanely energetic as they jump, dance, speed walk and throw parties all over the board room. The courtship of the main characters is charming in its efficiency in a way that feels like a quirky romantic comedy. When their attempts at having a child fails, they find themselves thrown into a panic that threatens to end their vicious climbs to the top of their respective careers.

We Glow has a big heart and an amazing emotional core. By the last scene, I was surprised at how much I cared about these two characters and wanted those crazy kids to work it all out. The story bounces between the board meeting and the personal history of these two people, from their meeting and subsequent quick marriage deal to the trip to Christmas Island that helps them realize that maybe the corporate life isn’t everything. A must see for anyone who like funny, quirky, energetic comedies that hits you right in the feels.

But that’s just my opinion and I really would like to know what you think. Tell me in the comments below!
