Same Day Theatre presents In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play

It’s the dawn of the age of electricity and doctors are finding all sorts of uses for it, including using a vibrator (in the traditionally considered use of the device) to treat the catch all ailment, hysteria. That’s the set-up behind Same Day Theatre’s In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play, running at the Gladstone now through June 1st.

Bronwyn Steinberg and Sarah Finn talk about In the Next Room and give you a look at one of the scenes:

In the Next Room, or The Vibrator Play, presented by Same Day Theatre.Imagine a time when electricity was a novelty and female “hysteria” was considered a treatable problem. Now imagine what happens when they both come together… In a genteel, Victorian-era spa town, Dr. Givings specializes in treating hysteria in women with a mysterious, electrically powered device. His treatments do give rather vocal relief to his patients, which are overheard by hiswife, Catherine, who is more than curious about what’s going on in his operating theatre but doesn’t dare ask. Yet. Ruhl’s play is at once a deftly comic skewering of societal repressions and a lyrical exploration of love. It has been staged across North America and Europe and has been translated into Spanish, Hebrew and German.

The play is directed by Bronwyn Steinberg and features Sascha Cole, David Whiteley, Michelle LeBlanc, Sarah Finn, David Frisch, Dilys Ayafor, and Robin Toller.

The show runs from May 15th through June 1st, Tuesday to Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $39, with discounts for seniors and students. They can be purchased online at The Gladstone’s website, by calling 613.233.4523, emailing gladstoneboxoffice©gmail•com, or in person at the door: 910 Gladstone.
