U of O’s Broadway-Off-Broadway presents YouTube* The Musical

In an ambitious undertaking, U of O’s Broadway-Off-Broadway club members have collaborated to create an original musical based on the popular video/social media site from which the play takes its name.

On April 6th and 7th, University of Ottawa’s ‘Broadway-Off-Broadway’ club presents the comedic stage production spectacular YouTube The Musical, that is sure to become the viral talk of town and a guaranteed highlight from the University this year.

ALL ORIGINAL MUSIC, ALL ORIGINAL SCRIPT.

The proceeds from this year’s Broadway Off-Broadway for the FIRST TIME are being donated to charity! Our charity of choice is one that really rings true in the world of both university and theatre. Jer’s Vision is a youth led organization that is making a real difference in the communities they work in. They work to eliminate bullying, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of discrimination in schools and youth communities across the continent and in some parts of the world.

YTMDirected by fourth-year Communications and Theatre major Liisa Steinwedel, YouTube The Musical uploads the audience on a virtual song and dance journey that sees the coincidental connecting of the lives of four quirky characters: Charlie (Sam Toews), Rebecca (Sophie Yelle), David (Thys Armstrong), and Caroline (Kelsey Tamblyn).

Transported and then lost in the world of YouTube, the characters venture through the digital land but not without crossing paths with some familiar faces, personalities, and viral superstars.

The show is written by uOttawa students Samantha Bryant, Laura Drummond, Allison Hill, Trevor Smith-Millar and Liisa Steinwedel.

Original Music written by: Dorian De Luca, CJ Lopez, Andrea Polgar, Liisa Steinwedel and David Tone.

Choreography by: Tyler Dasberg, Emily Cordes, Stephanie Boucher, Liisa Steinwedel and Hannah Behzadi.

What people are saying:

  1. Mary Annala says:

I went to see the premiere showing of YouTube* the Musical on Saturday evening,
I have to say it was one of the most hilarious shows I’ve seen in a very long time.
It is a well written unique storyline which creatively connected many YouTube videos and characters.
The show is full of original lyrics and music suiting the story well, it is hard to believe that a group of five students wrote all the music in a period of three months.
Not unlike previous shows in the University or College setting, this show presented its own set of technical difficulties regardless of which, the cast worked through them.
Congratulations to Director, Liisa Steinwedel and the cast and crew of over thirty amazing young people who put their strengths together to provide the almost sold out show audience a collection of laughter, stunning harmonies, perfectly choreographed dance routines which brought the audience to their feet in a standing ovation.
If you missed it this weekend, watch for it on YouTube within the next month as it is to be uploaded to the site.
